Sealants, Fillings & Bonding

There are three common ways we may recommend repairing damaged teeth or preventing decay:

Sealants

We paint these acrylic coatings as a preventative barrier against bacteria, typically on the chewing surface of your back teeth. They take only a few minutes to apply and last up to 10 years before reapplication is needed. Children from their early teen years and adults can benefit from sealants.

Fillings

When your back teeth have been damaged by cavities or decay, we may restore them using a silver-coloured amalgam material that is very strong. However, amalgam fillings can expand and contract with heat and cold, and over time, can fracture your tooth. If you have fillings, be sure to let us know if your bite feels uneven, or if any sensitivity or discomfort increases or continues beyond three or four days.

Bonding

Also known as “white fillings”, bonding restores teeth that are decayed, chipped, fractured or discoloured, or to close gaps between teeth. We prefer this treatment to common silver amalgam because it uses a type of plastic called composite resin that can be custom coloured to precisely match your teeth. White fillings add strength to your teeth by bonding directly to the healthy part of your tooth.
