What is Dental Sedation?

It is our mission to do everything we can to help you feel relaxed during your dental appointment. We will work at your pace, take breaks when you need them, and provide calm reassurance.

Dental sedation takes comfort a step farther. It refers to a variety of medications used to reduce discomfort and make patients feel at-ease during dental procedures.

During oral surgery, we use IV sedation and general anesthesia to help ensure that patients are comfortable while undergoing their procedures. We are also able to provide nitrous oxide and oral sedation options for nervous patients. Our dentists can help determine which of these is right for you based on your level of dental anxiety and the complexity of the procedure.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide is inhaled through the nose. The medication calms patients even though they remain awake and able to communicate. It also tends to lessen anxiety, increase pain threshold, reduce gag reflex and make time seem to pass more quickly.

Oral Sedation

Your dentists can prescribe oral sedatives in pill or liquid form for you to take before a dental appointment. Though you'll be awake for the procedure, the sedative effect will cause feelings of relaxation and reduce discomfort caused by dental treatment.

IV Sedation

IV sedatives are administered directly into the bloodstream through a vein for the deepest level of conscious sedation. If you require IV sedation during your oral surgery, we will attach you to a monitor to track your heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen levels. Many patients fall asleep with this sedation option.

General Anesthesia

General anesthesia is a controlled state of unconsciousness that eliminates awareness, movement and discomfort during dental treatment. It allows for complex treatments to be completed while you are asleep. Our dental team only uses general anesthesia if you are undergoing oral surgery.
